SUREL’S PLACE, GARDEN CITY, IDAHO
What an inspiring spot! It’s a one-person-at-a-time residency in a small community surrounded by Boise. You’re half a block from the gorgeous Boise River with parks, lakes, surfing practice, and restaurants, and you have a gorgeous book and art-filled house created by Surel Mitchell (1944-2011), a New York painter who moved here with her husband in the 1970s. Determined to shape a life to her taste, she lobbied successfully for a Live-Work zoning arrangement, and drew artists from all fields into her orbit. It’s a quirky neighborhood with loads of wineries and breweries, a million-dollar house here, a trailer there. Those who run the place and the neighbors couldn’t be kinder—there are gift cards, opportunities to see theater, concerts, museums, gardens, and more. I got so much written while enjoying all kinds of new experiences in a new state.
